Inspiration from Mom

With Mother’s Day approaching, I reflect on my mom who served as an inspiration for me launching my business over three years ago. My mom is a great cook, which is a common theme among Italian American households! But my mom also has a talent for making the food look as appealing and delicious as it tastes. For any holiday or party, she takes pride in planning ahead and thinks through every detail as she prepares each dish. She even has a journal in which she recaps every celebratory meal by jotting down key takeaways that inform the planning for the next event. These takeaways include the amount of food made, the number of people in attendance and which food items were enjoyed the most and/or least! I must say this comes in very handy when you need to figure out how much food to make for any given event. My mom is a highly valuable resource when planning a party!

For my entire adult life, I have always wanted to start my own business. My parents both had the desire to be entrepreneurs and gave it a go when I was young. My mom started a small private catering business and launched a gift basket business called Klassy Kreations. Back then, gift baskets were not so common. They were new and novel ideas. My mom was ahead of her time. Her knack for making delicious food look beautiful and having a creative design eye were apparent in her work. The business started organically by word of mouth and steadily grew over time. She came to a crossroad and had to decide whether to move forward with a larger investment in a brick-and-mortar location. She and my dad decided not to take the financial risk at the time. My mom decided to pursue her college education and graduated with a BA in Marketing at 47 years young. She then proceeded to have a successful career in business until her retirement.

My desire to have my own business stems from what I saw my mom do. I always enjoyed cooking and baking. Throughout my adult years, baking became more of a passion for me, and I always thought of a way to parlay my love of baking into a business. Remember my mom’s journal? Well, as I was debating on a business venture, I thought about the Salted Peanut & Dark Chocolate Toffee that I made every year for the holidays. My mom pulled out her trusted journal and read her comments year over year. Every year the comments were the same…” the toffee was a big hit” …everyone loved the toffee,” etc. And that was one key factor in deciding to launch For the Love of Toffee!

Like my mother’s gift basket business, For the Love of Toffee has been seeing steady growth since launching in September 2018. And now, in 2022. I made the decision to take my business one step further with a brick-and-mortar location. It is exciting and scary all at the same time, but I know in my heart that this is right for me. As my mom taught me, it is never too late to pursue your dreams…I cannot wait to see what the future brings…Thank you, Mom. Happy Mother’s Day.
